Food Pantry & Clothes Closet

Both the Brenda M. Hauk Food Pantry and the Mary J. Brown Clothes Closet of Peace Presbyterian Church began with member energy, prayer and devotion to meet the physical needs of people around us. The food pantry began in late 2005, literally in a closet, primarily to serve the needs of an immigrant African congregation that rented space within our facilities. When the economy declined in late 2007, the ministry grew and grew to the point that we had to move it into a large room formerly occupied by the youth ministry. It was outfitted with 5 refrigerators and 3 freezers and now is able to provide groceries and meat to between 100 and 140 families per week.

The Clothes Closet began in Fellowship Hall in 2008 as a clothing drop-off and pick-up on Sundays after church during the same hours as the food pantry operation. It grew to the point that it had to be moved out of fellowship hall and into a room on the lower level of the education building. That room was outfitted with display cases and clothing racks so people could come in and shop and receive up to 10 items of clothing or personal items, gratis. That ministry has now grown into a large room dedicated to sorting and arranging clothing for display and two completely separate men’s and women’s clothing rooms for shopping. It now has assumed the entire lower level of the education building. The area has been made handicapped accessible.
